People of Asia for Climate Solutions (PACS) acknowledges China’s unwavering dedication and unstoppable action in tackling the climate crisis and advancing renewable energy.
At the 2025 UN Climate Summit in New York, President Xi Jinping announced China’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aiming to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10% from peak levels, expand non-fossil energy in total energy consumption to over 30%, and scale wind and solar capacity to 3,600 GW.
“Domestically, these commitments are part of China’s broader strategy to combat climate change and to transition to clean energy. More importantly, they are critical bricks to build and enhance China’s green competitiveness”, PACS Executive Director Xiaojun Wang said.
China has repeatedly shown that it often delivers more than it promises. In 2024, China recorded over 1,400 GW of solar and wind to its total energy capacity, six years ahead of its 2030 target.
The updated NDCs come at a pivotal moment for climate governance. With COP30 approaching and the world striving to stay with the 1.5°C threshold, and as the United Nations celebrates its 80th birthday, multilateralism and global collaboration is more than ever so critical. China has made an open call for countries to unite under unwavering confidence with unstoppable actions.
As the world’s largest developing country, China has firmly reiterated the importance of the “right to development of developing countries to be fully respected.” This call resonates strongly with the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference, reinforcing the principle of South-South solidarity and the need to ensure that no one is left behind in the green transition.
With its experience, innovation, and leadership, China not only has the capacity but also the responsibility to turn its NDCs into transformative action and show the world that a post-fossil fuel future is possible and within reach.
